As complicated as we are as human beings, we are also pretty simple. We all have basic needs—a roof over our head, shoes on our feet, food, water, and safety. In addition to these “survival needs,” we also have “human needs,” or needs of the heart. We crave a sense of belonging, healthy relationships, love, purpose, and significance. At EMM, we like to say that people want to know that they matter. There are endless things we can do to help each other feel more like we matter, and this week we’re featuring one of the easiest and most effective methods. It’s time for all of us to LISTEN UP. Feeling heard is everything. It lets us know our thoughts and feelings matter. It helps us understand we have something of value to share with the world and reminds us that someone truly cares about us. Why? Because they took the time to truly listen—not just for the sake of listening, but listening to understand us better. We know the impact of being listened to and importance of being heard, so let’s gift it to as many people as we can this week and beyond. Even with social distancing, we can still call or videoconference one another to check in and listen. So reach out this week and offer up your ear you to someone. It is an act of love and compassion. Listening up matters.
