There are 3.8 billion people on social media worldwide. That is nearly half of the world’s population. That’s an astronomical number of people scrolling, liking, swiping, tagging, hash tagging, sharing, creating stories, watching videos, influencing, commenting and connecting. Even more staggering is that the average user is on social media everyday for nearly 2.5 hours. Multiply 2.5 hours by 3.8 billion people and you get, well, a lot of hours each and everyday. Since there is a good chance you fall somewhere in these statistics, this week, we want you to MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA MATTER. There is an upside and a downside to social media, for it’s a place where we can be informed and inspired. It helps us wish others happy birthday, good luck, and congratulations; and is a place where we can show our skills, talents, and the things we are excited about. Then, there is the downside to social media. It can be a time-waster. It can be mean-spirited and hurtful, and used to misinform, mislead, and bully. So, what can we do? Instead of shutting it down, why not turn it up. Let’s use our capacity and drive to do good to outnumber and crowd out the negative stuff. Let’s create opportunities to show others how amazing human beings can be. Let’s show the 3.8 billion people on social media how much and why they matter. Let’s MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA MATTER.
