The human race, much like any organism, is greatly motivated by a survival instinct or wiring for self-preservation. We want to be safe. We want to have food to eat and water to drink. We want to avoid pain or situations that might inflict it upon us. We want to live forever. After all, organisms instinctively want to live. In many ways, this has made humanity better. We have created laws and regulations to protect us. Speed limits, food safety and inspection, gun laws, and seat belt laws are just a few of the many examples. Pretty straightforward stuff so far. Take care of yourself and all is good. But we are more than this. We need to be more than this order to survive. For we have the ability to value one another. We have a heart that feels, and we can embrace the fact that when the water rises, all boats rise. So, this week, we want you to SERVE IT UP. Unfortunately, there are countless people in our communities that need our support. Most of them didn’t choose their reality. They didn’t ask to be foster children. They didn’t ask to lose their job. They didn’t ask for cancer. They didn’t ask to get old. But all of these realities are part of our reality. So let’s be of service. Let’s volunteer to help. This is what makes humans so special and more than just an organism. Serving it up matters.
